Winter in Denmark

Decided to write this entry after much thought. Coz I've not been visiting new places in the past 2 weekends... but the scenery & weather has changed drastically in Copenhagen. Yup! imagine my surprise when last Sun, i woke up, open the blinds and realised that the scenery outside was white! yeah.... just a short span of about 8hrs, it snowed... and covered everywhere in white. it was a pretty sight to me. Coz i went home around 12 the night before after visiting my colleague. we went to Copenhagen to check out the christmas decorations and also the christmas markets.
white snow everywhere outside my apartment
I must say, copenhagen looked different with all the festive lights. We wanted to go into Tivoli. Coz i checked that Tivoli has a great christmas market... and the deco inside is really wonderful and mesmerizing. but we did not enter.... coz there was a huge queue. by the way, its not cheap to enter Tivoli... every adult has to pay 100 DKK just to enter. If u want to take the rides, u got to pay somemore.
CPH city hall... looks a little scary in the red lightings

Anyway, Francesca and her son and me just strolled down Støget. and we saw christmas lightings, markets etc. and lots of people doing christmas shopping.

And yesterday, I visited Malmö for the 2nd time. I must say, this time i visited Malmö, the town definitely look much nicer. coz there was no fog! and the sun came out... but it was still cold. but the town really looked nice. I went to Malmö with my 3 other friends. Its been sometime since we went out together... it was nice to meet up and go out together and catch up. =D
Malmö
people with their dogs. and some of the dogs are really very unique dogs.
that's me on the bridge leading to the town center of Malmö. My friend captured this while i was going to take a picture of the scenery
that's 4 of us on the bridge

these friends of mine, unlike my Italian friend, do not bring lunch when we go out. So, we ate at a restaurant that was serving pizza. i must say the pizza was good... really good.... italian pizza. =D
After lunch was walking around and checking out the shops on the different things they were selling. most shops were selling christmasy things.... and clothes. some were cheap but most are expensive. I saw numerous nice things... but these days when i want to buy something i will always think properly if i seriously need them. if not i would just place the items back onto the shelves. hmmm.... even clothes... hahaha.... i will always think if i really need them otherwise i wouldn't buy. these days, the only places that i will purchase and have to visit on a weekly basis is the supermarkets! hahaha.... coz i need the supplies to cook my dinner + lunch. =P

but I must say that Malmö is nice. at the town square, they even have lights strung into the design of reindeer and bears, penguins and igloos. really nice. my friends and i had quite a great time in Malmö.

And today? i was holed up in my apartment... i did not get out. coz it was snowing pretty heavily the whole day.... and the winds were really strong. so i cooked korean tofu stew for dinner to keep myself warm. it was my 1st try with korean stew. and it turned out pretty good. i'll be having the same thing for lunch tomorrow!

yup! that's it for the time being. guess the next time i'll be writing will most probably be sometime end of this month or in jan. =D

Merry X'mas everyone & a Happy New Year! =D

2nd day in Netherlands - Delft & back to København

was busy studying for my Danish Language Module 1 test that took place today. Finally all the 'hard' work paid off! I passed! So i can register to take module 2. Yeah because I was studying for the test, i did not write the 2nd day's happenings in Netherlands.

Anyway, here it is......

I was not able to sleep well in Gerri's place. maybe because my air mattress was next to the entrance. And it was really cold that night even though the temperature in Gerri's room was about 21 degrees. Its just that the cold from the floor seep into the mattress, and in the middle of the night, it felt as if i was sleeping on a block of ice! yeah it was that bad. So i put on my thick jacket, put the blanket beneath me and over me and went back to sleep.

We woke up in the morning and the winds were howling madly outside. hmmm... today is a super super windy day. Anyway Gerri cooked Dutch pancakes (we felt that they were crepe rather than pancakes) for breakfast. After eating and doing our morning prayers, we were ready to explore the old town of Delft. As I mentioned earlier, today is a super windy day. And really it was windy. the winds were so strong that they can blow u away. I mean I've read such phrases in children's books in the past and never gave it much thought. But seriously this is true here in Delft! The winds are not chillingly cold like in Copenhagen but they are extremely strong!
Taken outside Gerri's apartment. The building in the far back is the Delft University building

The town center of Delft is rather nice. ermmm... but it look pretty similar to the streets in Amsterdam. even the town square looks a little similar to the Dam square in Amsterdam... only thing is the buildings' names are different, but architectual is the same.
one of the many canals in Delft
Quiet streets in Delft.... coz its Sunday. Apparently Netherlands is similar to Denmark. Shops are not opened on Sundays in towns.

And Delft is interesting, I mean there were 2 churches. 1 is called the new church and the other the old church! hahaha.... the new church's name is 'Nieuwe Kerk' and the old church's name is 'Oude Kerk'. According to Gerri, the New Church was built because the people noticed the tower of the Old church slanting. And the people of Delft were worried, So they built a new one. But in this day, the old church is still standing, with the tower tilted. And both churches looked old to me.... can't really tell which is new or old.

Stadhuis (city hall building) by the way, this building is still being used by the people as office. ermm... sort of like the town office.

Delft is more well known for the university. Not sure if you know, but Delft University is the top university in Netherlands. So basically lots of students studying in Delft University staying in this town. And there is a special item that is sold in shops, is an invention of Delft Univeristy! ermmm... its an umbrella! hahaha.... not something majestic. Apparently, this umbrella is an aerodynamic umbrella! So what so special about this umbrella? its longer in the front. This is to shield the user from the strong winds. Coz its often 1 meet strong winds in Delft. And the umbrella is not cheap.... really expensive. 1 brolly cost 49€. shocking!
The famous and expensive aerodynamic umbrella
We also walked a little further.... coz Gerri wanted to show us the one and only windmill in Delft. But this windmill is 'botak'! hahaha.... as in the windmill did not have any sails. Most probably the sail had been destroyed... could be due to the super strong winds there.
The windmill with no wind sills
After walking around the town, we headed back to Gerri's place for Keito to get her luggage. Then we took the train to the airport. At Leiden, we bade farewell to Gerri. I told her that most probably i'll see her in s'pore next christmas when i go back for a short visit and to extend my passport.

Farewell Netherlands! Till we meet again! =D
The time passed so quickly.... and soon at Kaastrup (København airport) i had to bade farewell to Keito. Coz Keito will be taking the Regional Train to Sweden, whilst i took the metro to Nørreport and from there take the bus to my place. Yeah my eventful weekend just passed by like this... and tomorrow is back to work & danish lessons!

a weekend get-away in amsterdam & delft (2nd country out of Denmark) - 24th Nov

Yup yup! its the 2nd country outside of Denmark! Hahaha.... people maybe thinking that I want to desparately get out of denmark after about 3 months here. Nah... it's just that it's interesting to explore new places. I'm heading for Netherlands on 24th Nov - 25th Nov. Well u can say that i've got like 32hrs in Netherlands....yup! its a very short trip!

My friend, Keito, a Japanese is now stationed in Sweden for work attachment for 6 months. We've got a friend, Geraldine (a Singaporean) doing her master in Delft University. It's rare that your friends are in the same continent as you at the same time. So we decided to meet in Amsterdam, tour around the capital and bunk over in Gerri's place for that Sat night. Keito reached Copenhagen on Thursday night and she bunked in my place for 2nights. However, something unplesant happened to her when she was out touring in Copenhagen central on Fri. She was robbed! not only did she lost her contents in her wallet (cash, credit cards, resident cards, driving license etc.) the thieves even managed to withdraw money from her bank account with her cards! This is really really scary! coz people have told me that Denmark is a relatively safe country as compared to the other countries in Europe. But apparently this was not so! Anyway Keito spent most of Fri in my apartment calling up the different authories to settle her stuffs. Since she was cashless, I lent her some money, coz she was deciding not to travel to Netherlands because of this nasty incident. I told her if you don't go, its even a larger lost as she has already paid for her ticket. Anyway going to Netherlands will also help to take her mind off the lost of her wallet and cash!

So on Sat morning, we woke up at 2.10am to get ready, so that we could catch the 3.18am bus to the Nørreport station and changed to the metro heading towards the airport from my place. Even though it was early in the morning, but there were quite a number of people in Nørreport! Keito was surprised, but i wasn't. Coz most of those people are probably heading home after partying in the bars or pubs in Nørreport.  Soon it was 6am and we took off! It was my and also Keito's 1st time to take KLM. I must say it was pretty ok. But when we landed in Amsterdam, the weather was not the best sort of weather. it was really very foggy!
A miniature KLM model at Schipol Airport in Amsterdam
hmmm....and Gerri could not meet us at the airport coz apparently trains were not functioning from Delft Station. Due to some train engineering works going on in the station before Delft. So Keito and I drank some coffee, then we bought our train tickets and head to Amsterdam Central station. Keito had a baggage on rollers, so we got a locker at the station and she left her baggage there. This will allow her to travel around with less hassel.

We decided to walk in 1 of the small alleys opposite the train station. the alley was very quiet, with some people walking now and then. However, all the people we passed by were men. and they were staring at us. and along that alley we saw some pretty interesting shops, hahaha..... those 'naughty' shops selling sex toys, bondage, costumes, ponographic magazines etc. and we saw quite a number of multi-coloured flags hanging on walls outside certain pubs, bars. ermmm.... I told Keito that I suspect those are gay pubs. and we also walked pass 'coffee shops' with some weird sweet smelling smoke coming out from them. By the way, 'coffee shops' in Dutch context means you can order cannabis, mushrooms, weed etc. from them. anyway we thought that perhaps Amsterdam is like this in all the streets, so we did not think too much. It was only much later that we learnt from Gerri that was one of small alleys in the 'Red Light District' in Amsterdam! hahaha.... we had a good laugh. Coz the shops in Amsterdam were not not just those. There are much more interesting sights in Amsterdam!
This is the small alley that we walked. It was in the 'Red Light District' area
We walked a little more and we reached Dam square. It is situated in the historical area of Amsterdam. When you reached there, you'll know u're in Dam square coz you will see the National monument, Madam Tussads building and the Royal Palace. Gerri told us that later in the day, there are lots of buskers in Dam Square. And its better if we don't take pictures of the buskers as they will demand we pay them when we take their pictures (hmmm sort of like they modeling for us, when we did not ask them to).

Madam Tussads. we did not enter coz it was about 20€. too expensive for us
soon it was 11am. we had to head to the central station to meet Gerri. It's good to meet old friends. we've got quite a bit of catch up to do. and having to live in a foreign country where the main language is not a language we're familiar with and you got no friends, it can be really terrible in the initial stage. hahaha... and it was so for the 3 of us. So we were able to understand each other.... but with the experiences, they also made us into much stronger and more independent people. =D
Streets of Amsterdam
Oh and 1 more thing, i thought that there are lots of bicycles in Denmark, but there more bikes and cyclists in Netherlands. Coz they have designated multi-storey buildings for parking of bicycles! I wonder how the bike owners know where they have parked their bikes..... hmmm...
one of the many multi-storey bicycle parking buildings

That's me posing with an interesting bike
So Gerri brought us to see the main sights of Amsterdam. hahaha.... and yes, now i see the real Amsterdam! I was really awed by the numerous canals in Amsterdam. And when i checked Wiki on Amsterdam, then I got to know that the Canal Ring in Amsterdam has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site! But I must say, with the canals and willows hanging at the canal banks and streets and sloping Dutch buildings, the sight is really a rather picturesque and it gives me a rather tranquil feeling.

Along our walking tour of Amsterdam, we saw a tulip museum, cheese museum, Anne Frank's house, The flower market, Museum Pleins and also the infamous Red Light District.

a few things people need to know about the famous things in Amsterdam:
1. the famous windmills
Apparently, Netherlands are well-known for their windmills. Coz the whole Netherlands is of lower sea level. and there is quite a bit of ground water under the land. In order to build structures on the land, the people had to pumped out the water. The windmills serve as the pumps in the olden days. And I bought a magnet that is a miniature windmill. Initially had wanted to buy a magnet that is of a design of a house bearing the words 'Coffee Shop'. but i decided to go for the conventional icon of Netherlands. =D

2. Clogs
This is another icon of Netherlands
A souvenir selling loads and loads of clogs. very colourful ones.

3. Cannabis or Coffee Shops
hahaha.... yup! Netherlands is more tolerant than any other countries in terms of consuming drugs. So u can in fact order cannabis in 'Coffee Shops'. In the flower market, we even saw kits teaching you how to grow your own cannabis. And in one of the souvenir shops we visited, we saw the shop selling cannabis lollipop, cannabis muffins, cannabis chocolate etc. yup! they put cannabis into such innocent deserts. But neither of us purchase any of these 'deserts'.
Grow your own Cannabis kit. Saw these at the Flower Market

4. Red Light District
Prostitution is legalised and licensed in Netherlands! These days, the prostitution in Netherlands has become a form of tourist industry. And in Amsterdam, it is very visible as in 'window prostitution'. we walked through an alley with red bulbs lighted up and there are huge ceiling to floor windows. looking through the window is a small room with a scantily clad well-endowed woman making kissy faces and pracing around in the tiny room. yup! they are the prostitutes. And if the curtains are drawn in the window, which means 'business is in progress'. So men can view the women and make the decision that he wants and pay her for the 'good time' that he wants.
The start of the 'Red Light District' in Amsterdam
I wasn't able to take any pictures of this, coz there are pimps around and they will destroy my camera or demand something. So we can only see and remember.
Gerri also enlightened us that gays and lesbians are well tolerated in Netherlands. In fact there are gay tour agencies here in Amsterdam. Not to sure if there are gay tour agencies in the whole of netherlands. So i was right! the pubs, bars, cafes with the multi-colour flags hanging at the entrances, are gay pubs.
Typical Dutch architectual with the waters flowing in the canals
After walking around Amsterdam, we headed to Delft to stay for the night. And Gerri cooked chicken rice for dinner! hahaha.... some S'porean food. =D
